They don’t want you to vote.

I was amazed by those lines. That’s a great way of motivating people to stay away and not vote. Unacceptable in a real democracy.

Do you have those lines in Germany? There are two polling stations within a 5 minutes walking distance of my home and I don’t think I ever needed to wait for more than 5 minutes.

Americans have been voting for almost a month already.

It’s like holiday shopping. Everyone rushes the store at closing time on Christmas Eve and the polls at closing time on election day.

I couldn’t imagine waiting half the day only to vote for a minute or two. Who actually still thinks that there’s real democracy in the US anyways.

You probably would never see those crazy long lines in Germany, there are plenty of polling stations. Usually in schools and gymnasiums.

The last time I voted in Australia I didnt have to wait in line or even slow my stride down.

I spent 3 minutes in line for a sausage sandwich though.

The US government is such that the people have real power, provided they vote. Enough consensus and they could change the constitution if they wanted. The right to vote is one of the only absolutes in our system, and the government has no choice but to bend to the will of it’s people.

Given that, what to people who want to maintain power and keep it for their friends and families do? Suppress the vote. Game the parties to determine who even can vote and when. Make it inconvenient. Convince people that the only power they have over their government isn’t powerful at all, and they won’t use it.

When people disengage from a system like ours, political power is concentrated in the hands of the few who remain engaged.

You could early vote all last week, and even over the weekend.

People rush to the polls at closing time because they had to work all day and the only time they can get to the polls is late when they’re finally out of work

Unless you live in one of the states that doesn’t allow it

If there was only one day to vote, I would agree; but American news is full of analysts analyzing early voting numbers.

By early voting numbers do you mean the number of people who voted early, or the results of the early votes themselves?

Number of people who voted early, which speaks to overall turnout.

I’ve voted in three elections. Each time I waited no more than fifteen minutes. Granted, I went to early polls in two of them since I was living out of the city, but still. Voting shouldn’t be a difficult affair.

I want to point out that the “early voting” isn’t really early voting in some places. Its just like regular voting that always has long *** lines. I know because I went to the “early voting” twice before and while the line wasn’t spilling outside, there was a crazy line inside. Part of the reason at least where I live? There aren’t enough voting machines.

How is it that they can have an auditorium full of people, but they can’t make 2 or 3 auditoriums full of voting machines. I think the only folks that get lucky are those that can mail in their votes.

Also, I just learned that both Connecticut and New York do not have early voting. That’s both unfortunate and contrary to the “Republicans are suppressing votes” narrative I’ve always heard.

Yes, we have early voting. And mail-in voting. But I would argue that the same problem persists with early voting, which is that it is only held on weekdays. It still presents a problem for people who work from 8-5, though arguably less so. I still firmly believe that Election Day should be a federal holiday. But then it would be too easy for the poors to vote. And the political establishment doesn’t want that.

Took me 15 minutes to vote. That includes waiting time and the time filling out a 3 page ballot by hand because this state doesn’t use voting booths.

And my CEO told the whole company to take the time they needed to vote. If it took 2 hours, you were cleared for 2 hours from work. If it took a half hour, a half hour. It was honor system but that’s how we work around here.
